Jay Rosen lançou no seu blog esta definição de Jornalismo do Cidadão: “Quando as pessoas anteriormente conhecidas como público usam as ferramentas da imprensa que lhes foram disponibilizadas para se informarem uns aos outros, isso é jornalismo do cidadão.” “Quando as pessoas anteriormente conhecidas como público usam as ferramentas de imprensa que possuem para se informarem umas às outras, isso é jornalismo do cidadão.” Eu traduzi “press” por imprensa, embora ache que o termo deverá ser de “publicação” ou “media”. As implicações desta curta, mas eficaz, definição são enormes. O que mais salta à vista é a ausência de intermediário. A ideia que tem passado de jornalismo do cidadão tem sido associada à participação do utilizador comum com as plataformas de media já estabelecidos.  Mas cada um pode criar a sua própria plataforma, e produzir conteúdos informativos. Luís Cevera diz que “O nome ‘jornalismo cidadão’ é abominável e deriva de um fracasso profundo da profissão jornalística”. Se por um lado é compreensível a validade desta afirmação, já que os utilizadores e o público em geral sente-se insatisfeito com a qualidade do jornalismo que se pratica, por outro não o acho abominável. Acho-o admirável. Penso que os cidadãos que fazem de repórteres têm a consciência do que é realmente importante para as vidas da comunidade a que pertencem, e a necessidade de criar informação sobre isso. Se não forem eles, muitas vezes não serão os media tradicionais a fazê-lo. E creio que abominável é o facto de ver que há jornalistas que se esquecem que são cidadãos, e que não contribuem para uma visão equilibrada sobre um acontecimento, como por exemplo, não ouvindo todos os envolvidos numa história, apenas porque não lhes convém. Para além de ser falta de civismo é pura imcompetência. Mas isto é apenas um desabafo. O que interessa  é que Rosen definiu de forma simples o que faz tanta confusão a tanta gente. O jornalismo do cidadão é a partilha de informação com valor informativo por parte de uma pessoa ou grupo, com outras pessoas. Ou seja, sempre existiu, mas apenas agora é que está a afectar o negócio das notícias.

The consequences of this concise, yet effective, definition are huge. What really stands out is the absence of the middle man. The idea of Citizen Journalism that has been going around is associated to the common user’s participation with the already established media platforms. But anyone can create their own platform, and create and distribute informational content. Luis Cevera said “The name  “Citizen Journalism” is abominable, and comes from a profound failure of the journalistic profession.” If on one hand the validity of this affirmation is understandable, since the users and the audience in general are dissatisfied with the quality of the currently practiced journalism, on the other i don’t think it’s abominable. I think it’s admirable. I think that citizens that play the odd reporter have  conscience of what is truly important for the lives of the community they belong to, and the need to create information about it. If not for them, most times the traditional media won’t do it. And i think that what is really abominable is the fact that there are journalist who have totelly forgot they are also citizens, and do not contribute to an even vision over a certain event, like not listening to all of the people involved in a story, just because it doesn’t favour them, or the people behind them. Besides the lack of civism, is sheer incompetence. But i’m just venting. What matters is that Rosen defined in a simple way what is so confusing for so many. Citizen Journalism is the sharing of newsworthy information by one person or group, with others. Which is, this happened since forever, but only now is affecting the media business.
