Este post fala do Joomla como uma boa opção para se construir uma página web para um jornal. Eu sei que é, e tenho tentado vender essa ideia para alguns jornais locais que não precisam muito mais do que pôr fotos e texto e ainda ter uma gestão simples dos conteúdos, com umas aplicações extra. Depois de 3 anos a trabalhar com o Joomla e de ter feito sites para jornais (www.vozdemira.com – há mais dois mas estão encerrados por razões que desconheço) consegui ver onde é que esta excelente plataforma CMS cumpre e falha, na construção de um site noticioso. Como isto dá pano para mangas, vou dividir este artigo em várias partes.

I know it is, and i’ve benn trying to sell that idea to a few local newspapers that don’t need much more than to place some pictures and the news stories, and still have a simple content management, with a few extra applications on the side.After 3 years working with Joomla and doing a couple of sites for newspapers (www.vozdemira.com), i got a clear perception where this CMS platform fails and delivers as a news website. Since this will get extensive, i’ll divide this article in several parts.

Porquê o Joomla?

Esta plataforma CMS é gratuita, fácil de usar, e tem imensas aplicações que podem ser de extrema utilidade na construção do nosso site. Há quem defenda que o Drupal é melhor que o Joomla, mas também é um bocado mais complicado. Creio que o Joomla é mais simples de usar depois de se perceber as suas manias.

O Joomla é a evolução de outra plataforma CMS, o Mambo. Muitas das ideias que se aplicavam ao Mambo ainda funcionam com o Joomla, por isso não estranhem se aparecer nos textos.

Qual é a aparência de um site feito no Joomla?

Bem, depende do template que escolherem, e acreditem, há milhares de templates gratuitos para download. Basta só espreitar nos links que vou dar abaixo. O que normalmente se faz é instalar o template que mais se aproxima do que queremos, e substituímos os elementos gráficos de origem por outros feitos por nós. Isto tem regras, que implica respeitar a unidade gráfica do template, e o trabalho de quem o fez. A não ser que queiram fazer um a partir do zero, deixem sempre a referência de quem desenhou o template. Por alguma razão é de borla.

O que é que é preciso para se poder utilizar o Joomla?

Para alojar um site construído em Joomla precisamos de ter um servidor que funcione com PHP/MySQL. Todos os alojamentos pagos permitem ter este tipo de funcionalidade, havendo alguns gratuitos que podem ser usados para testar a instalação e construção da página (http://www.jhost.co.uk/) . Muitos dos serviços possuem a opção Fantastico que permite a instalação automática do Joomla numa directoria à escolha. Caso não haja este tipo de opção, basta só fazer o upload do pacote mais recente de instalação do Joomla que pode ser encontrado aqui (http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/). Depois é só descompactar, e seguir as instruções de instalação (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,47524.0.html)

 

Que ferramentas existem para o Joomla?

Antes sequer de se comprar um espaço num servidor, podemos criar e experimentar o nosso site no nosso próprio computador usando o JSAS- Joomla Stand Alone Server (http://jsas.joomlasolutions.com/). Com o JSAS podemos instalar um site Joomla e trabalhar com ele como se estivesse num servidor a sério. Depois é só repetir todas as definições no site final.

Para editar os templates no Dreamweaver recomendo os plugins template builder extension , joomla 1.5 Extension for Macromedia Dreamweaver e Joomla! 1.5 templatebuilder for Dreamweaver.

Why Joomla?

This CMS platform is free, easy to use, and has lots of extensions that can be extremely useful to build our website . Some people defend that Drupal is better than Joomla, but it’s a bit more complicated. I believe that Joomla is easier to use after we get acquainted with all it’s quirks.

Joomla is the evolution of another CMS platform, Mambo. Many of the ideas that applied to Mambo still work with Joomla, so if Mambo comes up don’t worry.

How does a Joomla website look like?

Well, it depends on the template you choose, and believe me, there are thousands of them for free and ready to download. Just take a look around the links at the bottom. What you usually do is to install the template you found more suitable to the job, and replace the original design elements created by us. This has rules, that imply to respect the graphic characteristics of the template and the work of the person who did it. Unless you wish to create ine from scratch, always keep the reference of the template designer. What do I need to use Joomla ?

To host a website built with Joomla, we need a server that works with PHP/MySQL. All paid hosting plans have this, and there are some free that can be used to test the installation and the construction of the webpage (http://www.jhost.co.uk/) . Many of those plans have the Fantastico feature, that enables the automatic install in a directory of our choice. If that feature is not available, just upload the latest Joomla version that can be found here (http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/). Then just unzip it, and follow the installation instructions (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,47524.0.html).

What tools exist for Joomla?

Even before subscribing a hosting plan, we can create and test our website on our own computer using JSAS- Joomla Stand Alone Server (http://jsas.joomlasolutions.com/). With JSAS we can install a Joomla site and work with it just like if it was on a real webhost. Then you just duplicate all your preferences in the final website.

To edit templates on Dreamweaver, i recommend the following : template builder extension , joomla 1.5 Extension for Macromedia Dreamweaver e Joomla! 1.5 templatebuilder for Dreamweaver.
